The
formative interaction of the members of Slumlord Philadelphia
took place on a Monday night at Upstairs At Nick's (r.i.p.) sometime in 1999.
Rhythm section Ryan Kozar and Kevin Radar Cunningham were hooked up with an
instrumental trio called Chuck. Guitarist Kermit
Lyman fronted the prog-thrash combo Wally.
The
two bands played together a few times then continued to pursue their respective
agendas, and eventually both bands split up. Radar and Ryan went on to play
together in Dead By Dawn and Darryl Ray
and the Blues Outlaws. Individually, Radar toured with Incognegro
and howled with The Rock-O-Jets.
Ryan comprised half of The
Shovel and held the beat with Gringo
Motel.
Kermit
recorded and toured with bagpipe rockers, The
Rusty Nails, thrashed with the short-lived Malocches
and filled the space with a drunken
solo acoutic project.
Ryan
and Radar began demoing new material in early 2004, and after a chance meeting
at the grocery store, Kermit became a candidate for guitar.
The rest, as they say is even less interesting than the prelude.
They
practiced on Wednesday mornings, wrote some songs, thought of a name, made a
demo, played some shows, wrote some more songs and recorded their 10 song debut
with Worldeater
Records. They still practice on Wednesdays and plan to play
more shows.
