Syzslak :: When Demons Ride Angels - CD
Syzslak When Demons Ride Angels (released 2006) I don't know
if this is true or not, but either way, you have to respect a band named after
the bartender on the Simpsons! This latest release from the doom punk and grindcore
trio is just what you expect... Soaring guitars in-between throat-ripping vocals,
heavy bass lines and simple, but effective drum beats. Syzslak do offer something
a little different than other grind bands I've heard, a female voice thrown
in to keep you on your toes. It's not a shock styled change, but it does add
a nice depth to the sound Syzslak puts out. While brutally aggressive and charged
with dark energy, there are moments where the band winds back and down a little
for a more effective charge at your senses. "When Demons Ride Angels" lyrical
content isn't always dark and brooding, for instance on "W.W.J.B.", a personal
favorite, the band attacks the idea of who Christ himself would inflect untold
pain, damage and war mongering on. Does this make the band a political satirist?
Yeah, probably, but the main source of inspiration seems to come more from introspective
feeling and healing. Someone not much of a fan of grindcore or sludge, may find
this even depressing, but it appears that there is nothing to be depressed about,
as the band, through it's dark lyrics, are expressing a personal change for
the better through these tracks. Now that may be deeper than Syzslak's intent,
but I get that feeling that many of the tracks are person public offerings of
self-help. Alright, enough of that mumbo-jumbo... Fact is, "When Demons Ride
Angels" is a great album, if sometimes slow, the intent here is heavy metal/grind/crust
with brooding lyrics, shouted from the bottom of one's lungs, with a hard swinging
of the head up and down to the beat of the brutality inflicted on the drum kit.
For fans of Toxic Narcotic, but grittier and dirtier, Syzslak offer a tremendous
blast of rock.

Syzslak :: When Demons Ride Angels - CD
These guys are spastic, hyper, energy driven grind-metal/punk. Every second
of this is jam packed with the kind of adrenaline that usually only comes from
the very peak of most performances. You can pit to this, you can slam, you can
head bang, whatever you like. This is extreme without fitting many of the stereotypes
and cheese-bag sub-genres. Its just good to the last drop hard-ass music thatÕll
wind you like a clock and pump you like a nickel-night hooker. Syzslak does
not conform. They are angry, they are in your face, and they are throwing down
whether you want to or not. HowÕs that for a review. No namby-pamby dissection
of guitar tablature or introspective interpretation of lyrics. This CD exudes
Òfuck you!Ó ThatÕs enough said.

Syzslak :: When Demons Ride Angels - CD
Jokey, crusty death metal that somehow manages to sound like a mix between Motšrhead
and Morbid Angel, mostly due to the garage production. I had no idea bands like
this still existed. Back in the very early 90Õs, I wrote for this Xeroxed fanzine,
and I used to get tons of tapes like this one, especially from this one label,
Wild Rags Records. I guess Worldeater Records is something like a Wild Rags
Records for the new millennium. Which IÕm not sure is something you would want
to strive for, but there goes. At least they sell their records at a very affordable
$6, so you can afford to experiment with stuff like this, if youÕre attracted
to death metal that has a psychedelic drawing of a goofy-looking demon stealing
a psychotic teddy bear from someone sleeping in a coffin on the back cover.
This bandÕs debut EP was called ÒHitler CouldÕve Been AbortedÓ, you know. Once
you get used to it sounding like shit, this isnÕt half bad, actually, there
are some good song structures in it and all, and thereÕs not a trace of pop
or emo in it, which is becoming more and more uncommon in metal these days.
ItÕs nice to know that someone is still fighting a losing battle for this breed
of un-music, but IÕm not sure theyÕll get too many recruits for the battle against
MTV, modern metal, and mankind. Which is likely the way itÕs intended anyway.

Syzslak :: When Demons Ride Angels - CD
A full length release of Philly's extreme doom grinders. This is extremely bass
heavy, delivered with brutal pummeling crunch and distorted in a crushing way
that rips. They've got their own unique blend of crushing grind power to stand
out, and crush the boundaries and genres. I'm not always one to go for a grinding
sort of mayhem, but Syzslak defy category and warble some good heavy riffage
in a brutal and catchy manner. Check them out. (-CHRIS) SLUG & LETTUCE #86/WINTER

Every time you think you know what this disc is going to do, you wind up wrong...unless
of course you just think it's going to rock you. Burly fucking stoner grind
from Philadelphia with a HUGE production that's got bottom end practically falling
out of my stereo, and slow crushing riffs that crash right into a wall of blasting
chaos. A power trio with three vocalists whose attack on the mic is completely
different. With the exception of the 5 1/2 minute instrumental title track,
every track is stellar, and live (especially in a dank basement), they absolutely
destroy. Use BRAINOIL as a starting point, but add in healthy heaps of rock
and roll and thrash...for anyone who likes it heavy. (-ROBERT) SLUG & LETTUCE

I don't know if this is fitting, but this is what I would have pictured if Corrosion
of Conformity became a grindcore band or a band that added grindcore elements.
On the first song, "Fallen Hand," they reminded me of COC before they go into
the blast beats of noise aggression. That sound is dispersed throughout their
songs. These recordings have a dirtiness that I like. They have an almost live
quality to them-rough around the edges and not exactly perfect-and more in tune
with punk than metal. If this had come out during the crossover period of the
mid to late '80s, this would be on everybody's want list. -Donofthedead

Syzslak :: When Demons Ride Angels - CD
This is all over the place. This is like a mix of Black Metal,
Death Metal and Thrash Metal Music. Vocally, the singer switches between everything.
One second it’s high black metal vocals, the next verse we have thrash
metal vocals, then the next verse is death metal. The music is fast, speed metal
sounding. Something you would have heard in the 80’s, with the bands Anthrax,
and Metallica. Songs are quick, not very long. Very unique sound, with all types
of metal mixed into one band.

Ride Angels - CD
I've heard good things about this band, yet have not had the chance to hear
them till now, and they aren't bad. This has a weird sound, kind of like dirty,
driving crust with stony riffage, done in a tasteful way not like they are throwing
all these weird music styles together in a mish-mash of riffs. Fronted by a
female singer/bass player with scathing vocals, singing about life's daily tragedies
of war, depression, and drugs. A lot of songs on this CD rip and some of them
are not so ripping, but thats life.

Syzslak :: When Demons Ride Angels - CD
Not too long ago I reviewed a 7" EP ("I Am Misery") by Syzslak and I was
pretty much pleased by the few songs that the EP presents. Not long after I
published the review I got a message that the new album was in the works and
that I had to keep my eyes open, well, so I did. And here it indeed is: "When
Demons Ride Angels". A title that leaves very little to the imagination, and
even less for those who heard their last 7" EPs (I still have to get one for
the sake of completion, I am a collector and vinyl freak after all). Evil ridden
sludge in its purest formÉ The fact that this sludge band goes further than
the usual aspects in doomcore is actually what makes Syzslak more interesting
than the big majority of the other bands in the genre. Much more with that punk
attitude and even some of those rather simplistic punk rhythms yet all of this
is done in heavy distortion and totally bass driven. The female vocals of Kate
are still some of the best in the genre, and that is absolutely a thing that
works in their advantage. They go from being totally punk/crust band in "W.W.J.B."
(with great lyrics, a quote: "Terri Shivo and Michael Jackson are both weapons
of mass distractions") to some more doomy tracks (like the title track "When
Demons Ride Angels") but the difference with the aforementioned "I Am Misery"
7"-EP that I reviewed some time ago is that they have thrown it in a more punky
swing. So not much is left of that Black Sabbath ridden sludge that they displayed
on "I Am Misery". They kind of switched it all and put it in reverse, some way.
They first played sludge with a punk/crust sound, now its more the other way
around, more crusty songs with a rather uncomfortable feel over it. Both ways
seem to work perfect to me, whether it is because of my own punk/hardcore background
or that I am just open for changes is not too clear. Yet, I want to say that
I am not doing the band full justice with the label 'punk', as this goes much
further than a pretty static genre that punk is these days. An album like this
(though just clocking under half an hour) makes me wonder how a live show of
Syzslak would sound like, I really hope to see them one day, see this as a invitation
to our European vast lands

Syzslak :: When Demons Ride Angels - CD
Worldeater Records I was highly anticipating this record and now that I've given
it a couple of spins, I'm here to say that it is everything I hoped it would
be and more. Syzslak blew me away with their last two 7 inches and it is only
natural that this full-length showcases a band who has grown ten-fold in both
song-writing and as musicians in general. Once again Syzslak never stick with
one style and weave a highly unique blend of crust, thrash, grind and sludge.
The difference from song to song on this album is striking as they never really
repeat things too much and always keep switching tempos and styles on a dime.
They open things up with the raging blast of "Fallen Hand" which starts out
with a bit of groove and then they lock into some fast as hell riffing that
sounds almost like classic death/thrash with some intense chord progressions
that really get the blood boiling. "Reeks of Despair" is another instant classic
that opens up slow and threatening with a down-tuned riff that would make Grief
proud as the song slowly picks up tempo a bit and nails you with some nice sludged
out grooves. Then what about that noticeable Sabbath swagger that the band lays
down on the punishing chorus of "Lethal Injection"? That shit is absolutely
priceless if you ask me. I just love the way these guys (and gal) change things
up so much from song to song. I mean "W.W.J.B." is almost an anthemic punk/crust
kind of song with only a way more aggressive edge, think Caustic Christ with
a bit more thrashing and straight-up metallic influences at work from time to
time. Everything about this disc totally rules. I must also note again, that
I absolutely love the vocal variety that they hit you up with on this record.
There's a bit of everything from intense screams, shouts, growls and everything
and anything in between. Everyone takes turns behind the mic delivering a great
mix of trade-offs and even some gang styled vocals from time to time and it's
absolutely amazing. So, the bottom line here is that if Syzslak doesn't blow
the minds of fans of the above styles then I really am not sure what to say.
You might be deaf in that case, that is all I can say. For everyone else, this
album is fantastic. If you dig crust, grind, thrash and sludge you can't miss
this one; end of story. Highest recommendation.

For those not familar with Syzslak, they blend a ton of different heavy styles
to form a pretty unique sound. I just got this new one, and I'm loving it so
far. It's one of those that's going to take awhile to digest since it covers
so much territory. Anyway, I know some of you guys dig them already, so pick
this one up. For those looking for something new with punk energy, sludge /
doom heaviness, and alternating male / female shouted / growled vocals and a
little bit of grind, give this one a shot. More on the songs later once I have
a few more listens. This one is not a self-release, so it's an actual cd (rather
than cdr) in a legit jewel case & everything. Edit: Oh yeah, get it from Worldeater
Records for cheap!

Syzslak :: I am Misery - 7"
This is another great looking 7" from the World Eater Records label, pretty
much in the vein of Myles Of Destruction/Abiku split 7" (if we talk about
looks). And again it is something special, a band I never heard of before, but
sometimes one should let himself be surprised. This 7" EP is limited to
1000 hand numbered copies on red vinyl, a nice little addition to vinyl freaks.
Though the music is the most important
Syzslak is a screaming crusty/sludge band in the best underground
tradition. So this band doesn't operate in the well-known Neurosis and Crowbar
paths but have actually something new to offer. For a change we find a girl
on bass and vocals, which definitely gives the music something extraordinary
and special, for female screams is always something which I adore for some reason
(big fan of bands like To What End? and such). Though a few spins are recommended
to get into this Syzslak for it is something unusual that demands some time,
at least I had to invest some more spins than usual but it turned out to be
great after all, so worth the effort. What makes the music rather unusual is
that the bass of female bassist/vocalist Kate has got the leading role and the
guitar is more of a minor importance. That results in a low rumbling sound with
a huge bass sound. The doomy atmosphere is something that makes the music enjoyable
for more than the few undergournd fans if you'd ask me, an open minded doom
fan could easily like this is as well. The last track of the 7" EP called
"Mars" has even got a true Black Sabbath feel over it and is a lot
slower than the other songs on the EP. This is absolutely an interesting EP
worth the $3 bucks it will take to get one to your collection

Syzslak :: Destroy the Light - 7"
I was first introduced to Philadelphia's Syzslak last year with their "I
am Misery" 7" and I was pretty damn blown away with the mixture of
sounds that battered my ears. They combine sludge, crust and grind with some
elements of just plain weirdness that just completely enveloped me in their
multi-faceted attack. Well, the band is back with another killer 7" with
three new tunes on side A (these tracks were actually culled from the "I
am Misery" 7") and two tracks from the "To Hell with You"
demo on side B. Once again, Syzslak have delivered another slab of crusty, sludgy
goodness that will beat you into the dust and it comes packaged yet again with
a killer layout and artwork. Side A opens with the relentless "Last Stand",
a track that begins with a brutal grinding, crust agenda and then shifts into
a downtrodden sludge riff with precision vocal strikes nailing you from every
direction. One of the things I really like about this band is the variance in
the vocals ranging from vicious screams, shouts and growls that are contributed
by both guys and the gal in the band. The second song, "Mental Stew"
is a short, fast crust number with no remorse for your ears. Side A, close with
another fast paced jam "Adoradores de Quimicos" which is a fast as
hell mixture of crust/grind with all three vocal styles vying for possession
of your miserable soul. On the flipside, you get two songs from an out of print
demo that completely shred, most notably "Become the Father" that
mixes blazing crust/grind with yet another round of snarling vocal tradeoffs
and then features one of their patented shifts into grooving sludge with some
nifty lead guitar work. Once again, Syzslak has highly impressed me with their
all out intensity and deft combination of various styles of extreme underground
sounds. If you dig crust/grind with a heavy helping of sludge, tempo changes
and crazy vocal tradeoffs, you're going to love this band. I highly recommend
picking up both of their seven inches. Hopefully they'll record a full-length
of some sort in the near future because I can't get enough of this stuff! This
one was pressed on clear vinyl by the way, killer.

Hyper sludgemetal of the highest class, and by a threesome, no less. I don't
remember them standing out on the label's recent Genrecide compilation, but
I must have had my whole ass in my face if that song was anywhere near as goat-getting
as this set. Five songs, clear vinyl, guitar man looks like a Vulcan, bass lady

Syzslak, self professed "rock and rollers with high spastic energy,"
deliver their second 7" of warpunksludge on the non-profit, Marxists of
Metal label, WorldEater Records.
A great blend of a handful of my favorite definitions of heavy,
relying mightily on punk energy, sludge esthetic, and doom swing. Dual male/female
vocals. Songs about pretty people doing ugly things done up to the sound track
of a resin-thick, grotesque fuzz bass. Become the Father and We
Aren't the Winners are both culled from their excellent self-released
EP To Hell With You (Who Asked You Anyway Records). Tons of punk energy, occasional
blast beats, and metal guitar runs leave you feeling manic without blatantly
skipping genres. Definitely a bit spastic and tongue in cheek, but I'm digging
the revolution these guys are peddling, and they definitely grasp the idea of
riff and groove enough to get your head banging.

Here we have heavy and harsh music with desolate lyrics, and wicked looking
artwork. Destroy the Light even comes with an extra poster of the cover art.
Syzslak gives you a deep, resonating darkness with each song. With metal played
slow and heavy, or fast and punishing, these songs cater to those who desire
for harsh music. This 7" is on clear vinyl.

Syzslak :: I am Misery - 7"
This label sent 2 Syzslak 7"s at the same time, and I ended up with both.
This 7" is the newer one. On this piece of wax the heavy style has not
changed, but the songs are stronger and the recording is more vivid. The three
piece has more energy this time around, which makes for a more evil sounding
set of songs. The bassist vocals remind me of the woman from Karst- when her
vocals come in the sound is much darker. This 7" has similarly wicked cover
art and is on red vinyl.

Heavy as hell sludge filled hardcore from Philadelphia. The bass sounds like
a bulldozer...literally...and it feels like it will mow you over with every
note. Downtuned destruction, fast to faster, and then blasting off into chaos.
Stoner rock riffs invade the songs from time to time, and it's oh so glorious
when they do: abosolutely crushing. They use three vocalists, each distinctive,
the female vox are over the top demonic and fucking great while the dudes just
sound plain pissed. There's another EP from this recording session out as well....get'em
both.

Syzslak :: Destroy the Light - 7"
I realy enjoyed this slab of vinyl. It makes me feel dirty (in a Dave Tedder
way, not a Christina Aguilera way). Dark punk rock, with some slower parts and
fast blasty parts thrown in the mix. But for the most part, pretty mid-tempo.
Dual male/female vocals. Sludgy, dirty bass sound, raw guitar. Overall, nice
raw recording, twiddled just right, to where you can definitely still make out
all the individual instrument sounds. Quality release.

Syzslak :: I am Misery - 7"
This is the first EP, which i have to say i don't like near as much as the second.
This is an interesting band that combines elements of heavy rock and the stoner
crowd with crust punk and grind. Their sound is unique. Gruff gnarly female
vocals, and a guitar lead style with sour notes ever prevalent. And the reason
why i like thie one less, is becuse that guitar rock stuff has much more focus
and I just don't care for it.
-- Chris :: Slug & Lettuce #80
Syzslak :: Destroy the Light - 7"
Hmm, a promising but spotty debut from these Philadelphia dirge-meisters. I
love the sound they are going for-mining sludge / grind terrian like maybe CATTLEPRESS
meets DYSTOPIA with bits of DESPISE YOU and PLUTOCRACY thorwn in. They mix up
several riffs and tempo changes per song and thats a good thing, but sometimes
it works and sometimes they've got the suck turned up way too high. Basically
side A is pretty solid with nice transactions between mid-paced grooves and
grind and back again, while side B (from an earlier recording session) is where
it doesn't work so well and some of the riffs are just bad. In any event , the
good stuff is really good, so I'll be keeping an eye for 'em in the future.

Syzslak
:: I am Misery - 7"
This is a hell of a lot of noise for just a three-piece!
Syzslak are truly a unique band that cross many genres from full-on sludge /
doom to crust to grind and just a little bit of all out weirdness from time
to time. There is a great variety of sounds from song to song, which always
keeps things fresh and interesting. A track like "Don't Feed the Idiots"
is much more of a straightforward crust tune, whereas "Secret Handshake"
is a grooving instrumental with some awesome Middle-Eastern tinged riffing.
The closer "Mars" swings and rocks with crushing riffs that just ooze
with classic Sabbath blues / doom. There is just an incredible amount of variety
over the course of these 5 tracks, which makes me only wonder what they could
accomplish with a full-length release. Vocally, they are all over the place
with vicious male and female trade-offs mixing shouts, screams and growls for
maximum damage. This is top-notch stuff all around that I highly recommend to
everyone out there looking for something that is very different from the norm.
Comparisons are difficult but imagine Eyehategod jamming with a crust/grind
band, while drinking shots with vintage Black Sabbath. Crazy stuff, that's for
certain. Comes with superb artwork and packaging and on vibrant red vinyl.

Syzslak
:: I am Misery - 7"
Continuing the Worldeater Records trend of mixing
genres, this Philly trio fearlessly rides the waves of punk, metal and hardcore.
With a female bass player in tow, Syzslak (perhaps named after Simpsons bartender
extraordinaire Moe Syzslak) grinds through five skull-crushing tracks that showcase
the band's musical prowess and penchant for stuff that registers high on the
aggro-meter.
Intertwining bass and guitar lines introduce the record's title track. Bassist
Kate shares the vocal duties; this is what it sounds like when a female grunts
in that oh-so-sexy death metal way. Galloping drums and a simplistic punk rock
vibe run through the short, but very sweet "Don't Feed the Idiots";
Syzslak pipes out a resounding chorus and hammers the track down your throat
in little over a minute. "Hope is a Mockery of Reality" dabbles in
true metal, as a punchy bass line and waving guitar stagger along to the midtempo
beat. It's well done, but relatively unremarkable; the band is at its best when
it's slinging more attitude through the speakers.
The B-side -- featuring the instrumental "Secret Handshake"
and the Sabbath-flavored gloom rock of "Mars" -- is more doom-inspired.
On "Handshake", Kate's bassline almost overwhelms the other instruments,
easily tipping the recording needle into the red for the duration. The tune's
eerie melody and crashing midsection is polished off by a noodle-heavy guitar
break. Apocalyptic death-metal lyrics power "Mars", a seemly ode to
the red God o' War. Extra-gooey sludge riffs and an occasional solo back it
all up, with more heavy bass to boot.
I Am Misery doesn't break any new ground, but it definitely
doesn't disappoint, either. Syzslak does well with an unrefined sound, but certain
tunes would benefit from a cleaner recording -- some of the instruments are
pretty distorted. However, if the band had five solid songs to cram onto a seven-inch,
there's probably more goodness to come.
